What is a Vacuum Filter Flask?

A vacuum filtering flask (Buchner or "Sand Core" type) is a type of laboratory glassware (labware) that is used for vacuum filtration. It consists of a flat-bottomed Erlenmeyer filter flask with graduated volume markings and a sidearm fitted with a vacuum adapter that allows for a vacuum pump to be attached.


The vacuum is applied to the lower flask, creating a differential pressure across the filter paper. This differential pressure caused the liquid to flow from the funnel, through the filter paper and into the lower flask  The flask is used in conjunction with a funnel and Millipore filter paper to separate solid particles from liquids.
